Twenty years of success
20 years since its appearance on the market, Intermac still retains a strong commitment to technological innovation and a distinctive capacity to anticipate market trends and demand that remains second to none.
Intermac Glass & Stone Division was born out of the intuition and entrepreneurial spirit of its founder, Giancarlo Selci who, strengthened by the success of his company Biesse SpA, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of woodwork machinery and systems, decided to try his hand with glass then stone processing technologies.
Today, the division develops and sells machines to flat-glass and stone transformation companies and on a more general scale to the furniture, building and automotive industries and is made up of the following trademarks: Intermac, which specialises in multi-functional glass and stone work centres and glass cutting benches, and Busetti, which produces vertical and horizontal drilling machines as well as double edge grinding lines.
Since the launch of its first line of glass work centres, Intermac has gained a strong position among the industry’s world players and can boast much more advanced technology compared with its competitors operating on the market, which up to then had mainly consisted of manual or semi-automatic machines.
The introduction of work centre technology in the glass sector in fact signalled the start of a true and proper revolution. The results were immediate and extremely positive, arousing interest from designers and developers and providing a foundation for the creation of new markets; indeed the new technologies allow the automation of a number of processes, which had previously only been possible by hand.
Over the course of the 90s, Intermac entered the market of stone processing technologies with the launch of its first range of work centres MasterStone. Also in this case, success proved enormous, despite the fact that by then some producers of stone work centres had already appeared on the market, the versatility of Intermac’s technology was simply among the most advanced. Once again, the scope of innovation was revolutionary and the operation proved extremely successful commercially.
The same period saw an expansion in its range of glass working solutions through the acquisition of companies specialising in products that complemented those of Intermac, such as diamond tools, double edge grinding systems and drilling machines. Besides, in 1999, the company entered the technological glass cutting industry with its Fox (shaped cut) and Stork (straight cut) bench lines.
In order to adequately support its growing number of customers around the world, Intermac began to develop a network of subsidiaries in markets considered to be more strategic for the company, opening Intermac Asia in Singapore in1998.
In recent years, especially since 2004, Intermac has firmly consolidated its leading position in the world of stone work centres. At the Marmomacc Exhibition that year, Intermac presented its new Master work centre range equipped with revolutionary PC-based numerical control system. Once again, Intermac demonstrated its ability to revolutionise the industry by offering its clients a most advanced technology which makes stone and marble processing even simpler thanks to its programming ability using a simple and intuitive operator interface, while at the same time allowing a reduction in technical support costs and maximum compatibility in the transfer of data across company networks.
The new Master range is among the deepest ranges on the market and offers clients even wider possibilities of choice among the numerous models of the range, which stand out for the dimensions of the work table and the types of operating head (3, 4 or 5 axes).
In 2006, Intermac launched the Twin version of its Master work centre range, a machine equipped with a dual spindle head, a high-tech solution that allows simultaneous processing by two wheels running along the edge of the glass sheet, so as to obtain an increase in productivity of up to 40%.
Added to this are its numerous installations around the world with special machines and turnkey systems, particularly with cutting and double-edge grinding solutions, which bear witness to the company's capacity to develop ad hoc solutions alongside its customers, in order to meet the latest market demand.
Intermac is now celebrating its 20th year of business, with a keen eye on the future. Over the course of these first 20 years, the company has not rested on its initial technological achievements, but has continued to invest heavily in the continuous development of new products. It has maintained its vitality, its love of challenges and extensive awareness of operating in a highly dynamic sector, where the only way of keeping up-to-date with the times is not to take anything for granted.
